Digital immigrant versus Digital native. |
I believe Marc Prensky’s idea that if we do not engage
our students, we will enrage them .The 21st century learners are born into the
world of technology. Consequently, their thinking patterns are bound to be
influenced by their environment of technology. As a digital immigrant (who is
coming out), I could not understand how my children (digital natives) would manage
to do their school work whilst listening to music and online chatting. Students
develop high order learning skills such as problem solving, creativity, organisational
skills while playing the Xbox, Nintendo or any other electronic games. Digital
natives can surf the internet, for example, a child who plays basketball can
look up stuff on basketball sites developing research skills for school
assignments. Collaborative skills are developed on Facebook, msn messages, and
list goes on. Technology boosts and excites the students desire to learn and
integrate.

Yes, it is fascinating how students multi-task. I feel that we also need to give our kids head a rest. The extra strain that electric screens have on the eyes and the long term impacts this will have on students is yet unknown. I feel it is important to give students at school and at home a balance, and give the kids the tools to know when they have had too much high speed interaction. p.s I love your background screen
